Richmond Championship Show 2015 Critique

I was honoured to be asked to take over Jean Blandford’s appointment for Deerhounds at the last minute when she was taken ill.  I am glad to report that she is now much better and feeling more like herself.  Taking over from a breed judge such of repute was somewhat nerve-racking and I was rather nervous when I telephoned her the next day to enquire about her health, only to be told that she was delighted with my choice for BOB.  The entry was small but I was able to finish both in dogs and in bitches with a line-up of quality hounds.  I would like to thank my excellent stewards Mrs Bowen and Mr Nitson for a job well done.

Puppy Dog: 1st Steele’s Sorimsway Valient Hero.  Eleven month dog of good breed type. Well proportioned head with dark eye and neat ear.  Good length of neck, brisket well let down and nice rise over loin.  Profile movement good with long stride but a little close behind.   This should improve as he fills out with age. 2nd Presswell’s Sorimsway Honoured Past.  Litter brother to above, taller but less mature and thoroughly enjoying his day out by giving his handler a hard time.  A well constructed dog with much to like about him who should do well when he calms down.

Post-Grad.Dog:  lst Pink’s Greyhawks Romanie Drom. Tall, elegant dog who presented a lovely outline when stacked and moved out with drive.  Attractive head with neat ears and good furnishings. Strong neck into well-laid shoulder and plenty of depth to brisket. Good rise over loin and droop to tail.  Good angulation.   2nd Girling’s Pyefleet Tarka. This dog looked super when stacked with lovely outline but threw it away when he insisted on bouncing round the ring rather than striding out in true deerhound movement. He has a well-proportioned head, strong jaw, neat ears.  He has plenty of depth of brisket, good straight front and strong quarters. 3rd Steele’s Cotherstone’s The Barrister At Sorimsmay.

Limit Dog:  lst and RCC.  Finnett & Heathcote’s Hyndsight Run To You. Strong, well constructed hound.  Masculine head with strong jaw and bite, neat ears, good furnishings.  Nice length of neck into well laid shoulder. Good ribbing and depth of brisket. Nicely angulated front and rear.  Moved well, coming and going as well as with drive in profile.  2nd Bond’s Regalflight Ruebin.  Attractive dog with well proportioned  head and dark eye giving him a lovely expression. Strong neck, good ribbing and depth of brisket. Plenty of bone down to good well padded feet but would prefer a little more spring to pastern.

Open Dog:  lst and Dog CC  and BOB. Wilson’s Hamiltonhill Fred D Mercury. Tall elegant dog of lovely type and quality.  Handsome head with dark eye, neat ear and strong jaw.  Good length of neck into well laid shoulder, straight front with plenty of bone down to tight feet.  Nice depth of brisket and good ribbing, correct rise over loin and droop to tail.  Wide quarters.  Well angulated front and rear. Moved exceptionally well.  I was pleased to hear afterward that this gave him his crowning ticket.  2nd Help and Doves’ Beardswood Quinlin.  Another quality dog with lovely outline.  Good head with neat ears and strong jaw.  Nice front, good ribbing and strong bone down to tight feet.  Moved well but not as positive behind as winner.  3rd Finnett & Heathcote’s Hyndsight Colt.

Puppy Bitch:  !st and BPIB .  Adams’s head and expression.  Good length of neck, well ribbed back and good topline.  Just needs more time to fill out and mature.  Move out with drive if a little erratically.

Yearling Bitch:  lst Helps & Doves’ Foxcliffe Classic Liberty Freedom At Beardswood.  Very promising elegant youngster of lovely type and quality.  Feminine head, neat ears, good bite. Nice length of neck into good shoulder and excellent bone down to tight feet.  Presented a lovely outline when standing and was in serious contention for the Res CC.  Just felt she lacked the maturity of my Open Bitches winners.

Post Graduate Bitch: lst Finnett & Heathcote’s Hyndsight Reason To Believe.  Pleasing outline.  Deep chest with correct ribbing.  Good length of back. Nice bend of stifle and second thigh.  Moved with drive in profile but going a little close behind.

Limit Bitch: 1st Finnett & Heathcote’s Shagiead Mrs Bridges. I loved the type and elegance of this bitch.  Attractive head with good length of neck and correct shoulder. Good ribbing and depth. Well angulated front and rear with nice low hocks. A nicely balanced bitch who moved well.  2nd Girling’s Pyefleet Sabine.  Lovely head and expression. Long neck and correct shoulders.  Well let down and strongly ribbed. Well angulated quarters. A little straight in pastern.  Moved well in profile. 3rd Stuart and Holts’ Pyefleet Skatha At Ollandsheart.

Open Bitch:  lst and Bitch CC Finnett & Heathcote’s Hyndsight A Girl Like You.  A very well constructed bitch with good harsh coat. Well proportioned head, good eye and ear. Strong jaw.  Long strong neck’s into excellent shoulder.  Well ribbed back with good depth.  Nice topline with good rise and droop to tail.  Strong quarters, well bent stifle and low hocks.  Moved out correctly front and rear with long stride in profile.  2nd and RCC. Taylor’s Kilbourne Pandora To Talorpeche. A well balanced bitch of lovely quality. Good neck with well-laid shoulder.  Good front and strong well angulated quarters.  She moved with reach and drive.  Two beautiful bitches with little to choose between them and it was a close decision. Just preferred the outline of the winner on the day.
